Offence Summary

Perry McCarthy, a 65-year-old man from Penarth, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for committing multiple child sex offences against a young victim starting from primary school age.

Full Description

A Penarth man has been jailed for 21 years following a series of horrific sexual offences against a child. Perry McCarthy, aged 65, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, 2nd May, where he received his sentence after being found guilty on numerous counts related to child sexual abuse.

The abuse began when the victim was of primary school age, and she bravely informed her teachers about the traumatic experiences. McCarthy had initially denied all charges but was convicted after a thorough trial. The offences included six counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, four counts of voyeurism, three counts of oral rape of a child, one count of engaging in sexual activity with a child, one count of digital penetration, and one count of sexual assault by touching. The court determined that McCarthy must serve a minimum of 14 years before being eligible for parole.

South Wales Police played a crucial role in the investigation and prosecution. Detective Constable Joanna Cecerko commended the victim's courage, stating: 'I want to commend the victim for her courage in coming forward – thanks to her report and support from her family, justice has been served. It has been a traumatic time for everyone involved and I am hopeful the outcome at court brings the victim and her family some comfort which they deserve.' This case underscores the importance of reporting such crimes to ensure perpetrators are held accountable.

The sentencing hearing took place at Cardiff Crown Court, highlighting the severity of the offences committed over an extended period. McCarthy, from Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan, will now face the consequences of his actions, providing some measure of closure for the victim and her family.
