In a disturbing case of child sexual exploitation, Gemma Hill from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, was sentenced to six years in prison for her role in conspiring to facilitate the rape and abuse of a girl under the age of 13. Hill, aged 33, actively colluded with her partner, Stephen Arnopp, a convicted paedophile from Welwyn, by exchanging explicit text messages between January and June 2017 detailing the abuse Arnopp intended to carry out on the victim and even planning assaults on a second girl aged just nine.
The prosecution, led by Kim Preston at St Albans Crown Court, revealed that Arnopp provided the young victim with a phone and sent her messages, sometimes pretending to be a schoolboy named James, to coerce her into sending personal photos. This grooming culminated in Arnopp raping the girl twice on 5 June 2017. Following the assaults, the victim confided in Hill, who instead of offering support, pressured her to keep the incident secret. The truth came to light when the girl disclosed the abuse to her school, prompting immediate police involvement from Hertfordshire Constabulary.
During the search of Arnopp's home, officers discovered the victim's underwear in his bedroom, providing concrete evidence of the crimes. Further investigation confirmed Hill's complicity through the incriminating text exchanges. Judge Marie Catterson, while noting Hill's 'extremely low' IQ and mental vulnerability, condemned her evasive behaviour during police interviews and her anxiety over the victim revealing the truth. 'You were evasive, pretending you knew nothing,' the judge stated. 'It’s clear from your police interviews and the fact you were so anxious [the victim] shouldn’t tell anyone you knew perfectly well how wrong your partner’s behaviour was.'
Hill pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit sexual activity with a child under 13, receiving concurrent sentences of four and a half years each, plus a consecutive 18-month term for cruelty to a person under 16. Two additional counts of conspiracy to inflict actual bodily harm were left on file. In addition to her custodial sentence, Hill was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which prohibits her from contacting the victims or having unsupervised contact with girls under 18, and bans her from residing in a household with such children. The judge remarked on the 'sustained and significant planning' involved, expressing relief that the second potential victim was spared due to timely police intervention. The long-term impact on the first victim was described as 'incalculable, but... unlikely to be other than difficult and profound.' This case underscores the collaborative nature of the offences and the profound betrayal by an adult in a position of trust.
