Full Description

Stephen Anderton, a 53-year-old man from Padiham, Lancashire, has been convicted of committing a series of horrific sexual offences against children spanning more than four decades. The abuse began in the 1980s when the youngest victim was just four years old, involving the rape of three girls and the sexual abuse of a boy. Anderton's depraved actions came to light following a report from the mother of one of the victims in 2018, which prompted Lancashire Police to investigate and identify additional survivors.

Anderton, residing on Bank Street in Padiham, stood trial at Burnley Crown Court. On 4 August 2023, a jury found him guilty of five counts of rape and 15 other sexual offences against children. Following the verdict, he was remanded in custody, with sentencing set for 22 September 2023 at the same court. The case highlights the long-term impact of historical child sexual abuse and the importance of victim courage in bringing perpetrators to justice.

Detective Sergeant Alex Rawsthorn, from the Blackburn Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit of Lancashire Police, commented on the conviction: 'Anderton was found guilty of the most depraved offences imaginable. I would like to express my thanks to the officer in the case whose tenacity and dedication has been unwavering.' Rawsthorn also praised the victims, stating: 'Most importantly, I would like to place on record my sincere gratitude and admiration for the victims who have endured an agonising wait for justice. They have shown remarkable courage throughout this case.' The investigation was led by Lancashire Police, underscoring their commitment to tackling serious sexual offences.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden traumas endured by child victims over many years, with Anderton's crimes finally exposed through persistent police work and victim testimonies. The full extent of the sentencing will be determined in September 2023, but the guilty verdicts mark a significant step towards accountability.
