Offence Summary

Goherali Damani, a previously convicted sex offender from Morden, was jailed for one year for breaching a sexual harm prevention order by using public transport without a registered Oyster card and sitting next to an unknown woman.

Full Description

Goherali Damani, a 60-year-old resident of Pilgrim Close in Morden, south London, was sentenced to one year in prison at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court for breaching a sexual harm prevention order. Damani had a prior conviction in 2023 for sexually assaulting schoolgirls as young as 12 and exposing himself to women and children on buses across south London. Following that conviction, he was subjected to strict conditions, including a ban on using public transport without an Oyster card registered in his name and a prohibition on sitting next to any unknown female on such transport.

The breach occurred on 18 November 2023, when Damani was found sitting next to a woman on the 155 bus in Lambeth without tapping in using a registered card. He pleaded guilty to the violation, which magistrates described as showing a 'flagrant disregard' for the court order designed to prevent further sexual harm. This incident highlighted Damani's ongoing failure to comply with measures intended to protect the public, particularly vulnerable women and children, from his predatory behaviour.

The one-year immediate custodial sentence was deemed justified given the seriousness of the breach and Damani's history of sexual offences. The Metropolitan Police enforced the order and investigated the violation, reinforcing the importance of such prevention measures in managing convicted sex offenders in the community.
