A 37-year-old Scottish man named Gary Shields has been imprisoned for nine years following his conviction for grooming and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl he encountered on the social media platform TikTok. The case, heard at Preston Crown Court, highlights the growing dangers of online predation amid broader concerns over child exploitation in the UK.
The offences commenced when Shields, masquerading as a 19-year-old online, initiated contact with the young schoolgirl. He complimented her appearance and reassured her that their age difference could be overcome, building a false sense of trust over several weeks. Shields persuaded the victim to send him explicit photographs before arranging an in-person meeting in Penwortham, Lancashire. Driving her to a secluded car park at Penwortham Holme, he carried out the sexual assault while she was still in her school uniform.
Shields posed as a younger individual to gain the girl's confidence. He groomed her for weeks, exchanging messages that led to the sharing of indecent images. The assault occurred in a remote location, exploiting the victim's vulnerability. Judge Michael Maher, presiding over the case, condemned Shields' actions during sentencing, stating, 'She was two decades your junior, but the fact she was wearing her school uniform provided you with a sexual frisson.' The judge further described Shields' subsequent behaviour as 'tantamount to pimping her out' after the perpetrator added the victim to an online group chat with other paedophiles, sharing her photograph and encouraging explicit commentary from the group. One member reportedly referred to the child as a 'solid 12-year-old.'
Following the assault, Shields dropped the girl near her home and later boasted about the incident to others in the online group. The abuse was uncovered when the victim's mother inspected her daughter's phone and discovered the incriminating messages. Police arrested Shields, who initially admitted to meeting the girl but denied any sexual contact. He eventually pleaded guilty to the charges of raping a child under 13 and meeting a child after grooming.
In her victim impact statement, the girl expressed profound distress, saying she felt 'fear, stupidity and embarrassment,' particularly over the humiliation of being objectified in the group chat. Shields received a nine-year custodial sentence, with an additional year on licence. This case unfolds against the backdrop of national scrutiny, including Operation Beaconport by the National Crime Agency, which has revealed investigative failings in hundreds of historical grooming cases, as reported by IBTimes UK.
