Offence Summary

Tommy Lee Conway was convicted of sexual assault for filming and participating in the attack on an unconscious young woman at a house party. He was sentenced to two years and five months in custody.

Full Description

Tommy Lee Conway, a 28-year-old man from Norwich, was a convicted sex offender with a history of severe mental health issues and substance misuse. In 2016, he was found guilty of sexual assault at Maidstone Crown Court in connection with a disturbing incident at a house party where an unconscious young woman was attacked.

The court heard that Conway filmed the assault and was recorded asking for 'his turn' during the attack. Two other men were convicted of rape in the same case, highlighting the severity of the group offence. For his role, Conway received a custodial sentence of two years and five months.

Following his release from HMP Bure in June 2025 after serving a subsequent three-year sentence for an unspecified offence, Conway moved into a flat on Yarmouth Road in Norwich. Tragically, on 29 September 2025, he was found dead in his home, having taken his own life by hanging. An inquest at Norfolk Coroner’s Court, presided over by Coroner Robin Weyell, concluded that Conway had acted deliberately to end his life, amid a long history of mental health crises, including schizophrenia, anxiety, and previous suicide attempts.

Evidence presented at the inquest revealed Conway's struggles with addiction to alcohol, MDMA, cocaine, and synthetic opioids, which exacerbated his conditions. Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of these substances in his system at the time of death. Despite his challenges, family members described him as a devoted son, brother, uncle, and father who maintained strong ties with his loved ones, particularly relying on his mother for support.

Neighbours and police accounts detailed prior incidents where Conway threatened self-harm, including an attempt to hang himself from a balcony and walking into traffic while threatening to set himself alight. On the day before his death, he had approached neighbour Steven Treadaway for cigarettes and beer, admitting he felt down. His mother, unable to contact him after receiving suicidal texts, prompted the discovery of his body when Treadaway entered the flat and found furniture barricading the door.
