Offence Summary

Simon Paul Watson, a former GP, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to child pornography offences, breaching police bail, and violating Sex Offender Notification Regulations following his flight to Thailand in 2009.

Full Description

Simon Paul Watson, a former general practitioner from Ilkley and Otley in West Yorkshire, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a series of child pornography-related offences. The 45-year-old, who previously worked at Idle Medical Centre, absconded to Thailand in 2009 while on police bail during an investigation into his possession of indecent images of children. He was eventually located in Bangkok, a known sex tourism destination, and deported back to the UK after being arrested for overstaying his visa in May.

Upon his arrival at Heathrow Airport, West Yorkshire Police took Watson into custody immediately. He appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to 17 charges. These included offences related to child pornography, breaking his police bail conditions from 2009, and breaching the Sex Offender Notification Regulations. This conviction marks a significant escalation from his prior imprisonment.

Watson's history with such crimes dates back to 2005, when he was sentenced to two years in prison for trading child pornography online. At that time, he admitted to 11 counts of distributing indecent images of children and 11 counts of possession. A police search of his home on Fairfax Street in Otley in April 2004 uncovered 604 indecent images attached to emails he had sent. The court heard how the family doctor had developed an obsession with depraved images depicting youngsters engaged in sexual acts.

Detective Inspector Chris Stones of West Yorkshire Police commented on the case, stating: 'It is down to the extensive inquiries and tireless work of our officers, as well as work with agencies both here in the UK and Thailand, that we were able to locate Simon Watson. This led to the Thai authorities making the decision to deport him and allowed for the criminal process to be followed on his return to the UK. Watson’s actions can only lead me to believe he poses a significant threat to children, who will now be protected from him whilst he remains in custody.' The investigation involved collaboration between UK and Thai authorities, highlighting the international effort to bring him to justice.

Originally reported by the Wharfedale Observer, this case underscores the ongoing challenges in monitoring convicted sex offenders and the determination of law enforcement to ensure accountability. Watson's flight to Thailand occurred amid heightened scrutiny following his earlier release, but persistent police work ensured he faced the full consequences of his actions.
