A young woman, initially agreeing to work in the sex industry to earn money, found herself trapped in a nightmarish situation of exploitation in Hull. Gheorge Bonculescu, a 27-year-old Romanian national, controlled her completely, allowing her no freedom of movement or financial independence. Despite earning between £500 and £1,000 per day from prostitution, she received only £100 to send to her family, with Bonculescu seizing the rest for his own gain. He coerced her into seeing multiple customers, threatening to hit her if she refused or challenged him, and even warned that if he went to prison, he would kill her and others upon release.
The victim escaped her captors and, in a brave act, flagged down British Transport Police at Hull Paragon station in 2022. She reported being trafficked and forced into prostitution at a brothel in the city. Investigations revealed that Bonculescu, residing on Warmsworth Road in Balby near Doncaster, had met the woman through his wife while she was travelling through Spain. His wife, also involved in the sex industry in the UK, had lured her into the arrangement. Following her escape, Bonculescu, his wife, and his sister-in-law were found in a car in Hull city centre searching for the woman; the wife was in possession of the victim's passport, leading to their arrest.
At Hull Crown Court, Bonculescu admitted to controlling or causing prostitution for gain. Prosecutor Michele Stuart-Lofthouse detailed how the woman was given money only for food, cocaine, and clothes related to the sex work, and had to cover costs for advertisements and accommodation herself. Judge Mark Bury described the victim as having 'no freedom of movement' and being 'intimidated into doing that which you asked her to do,' essentially forcing her to work for him. He emphasised that Bonculescu had no right to be in the UK conducting such activities and noted the possibility of deportation during or at the end of his sentence.
Bonculescu expressed hopes of remaining in the UK post-release to resume his primary interest in selling cars. However, Judge Bury sentenced him to four-and-a-half years in prison. Detective Sergeant Richard Kirk of Humberside Police commended the victim's bravery, stating, 'Bonculescu and Birovescu are predators who manipulated a vulnerable woman, and used her for their own financial gain.' This case underscores the severe realities of sexual exploitation, with Humberside Police affirming their commitment to taking all such reports seriously.
