Offence Summary

Jason Scott Moore, previously convicted of child sex offences under the name Leon Barry Shinkwin, admitted to six new charges of making indecent images of children and breaching a sexual harm prevention order. He is scheduled for sentencing at Merthyr Crown Court.

Full Description

A Powys man with a prior conviction for child sex offences has admitted to committing further similar crimes, prompting an upcoming sentencing hearing at Merthyr Crown Court.

Jason Scott Moore, aged 35 and residing in Neuadd Terrace, Bronllys, Powys, previously known as Leon Barry Shinkwin, received a suspended 10-month prison sentence in May 2023 for making and possessing indecent images of children. Despite this, between April and November 2022, Moore admitted to six new charges of making indecent images of children, as well as breaching the sexual harm prevention order imposed following his earlier conviction.

The case came before Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday, 30 August 2024, but the sentencing was adjourned due to a conflict of interest. Ross McQuilan-Johnson, the prosecutor, explained that he had represented Moore during the previous sentencing, creating a 'significant problem' for proceeding. McQuilan-Johnson confirmed, however, that Moore was not in breach of his suspended sentence order from the prior case.

Harriot Ealden, representing Moore, requested that a pre-sentence report prepared in June 2024 be updated to reflect the progress her client had made in complying with the suspended sentence order. The court agreed, and sentencing was rescheduled for Thursday, 5 September 2024.

This development follows Moore's name change since his initial conviction, highlighting ongoing concerns about recidivism in sex offender cases. The offences occurred prior to his suspended sentence, underscoring the challenges in preventing reoffending under community supervision.
