Full Description

A Devon man, Michael John West, aged 54 and formerly residing in the Wonford area of Exeter, has been sentenced to six years and six months in prison for the sexual abuse of three children. The offences, which took place in Exeter during the late 1980s and early 1990s, involved multiple instances of abuse targeting the young victims.

West appeared at Exeter Crown Court on Monday, 11 August 2025, where he pleaded guilty to seven counts related to the sexual abuse. These charges included multiple indecent assaults and indecency with a child. Although he entered his guilty pleas on the first day of his trial in July 2025, this came more than two years after he was initially charged. The court heard that West carried out the abuse on several occasions during the specified period.

As a direct result of his convictions, West has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring to protect the public. The case was investigated by Devon and Cornwall Police, with Detective Constable Kathryn Jago commending the victims' courage: 'I wish to commend the victims for their courage and resilience throughout the investigation and thank them for their continued support of Devon and Cornwall Police. The strength and bravery shown by the victims during the extended period has undoubtedly resulted in the guilty plea, conviction and subsequent sentencing.'

The sentencing underscores Devon and Cornwall Police's priority in tackling sexual offending, particularly against children. This case highlights the long-term impact of such crimes and the importance of victim support in achieving justice, even decades after the events occurred.
