Johnathan Sutton was convicted of two counts of rape committed in Cwmafan in 2021 and sentenced to an extended 18-year term. He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty at Swansea Crown Court.

Full Description

A man from Walsall in the West Midlands has been imprisoned following his conviction for two rapes that occurred in the Cwmafan area of Neath Port Talbot. Johnathan Sutton, aged 35, was living at an address in Cwmafan at the time of the offences, which took place in June and August 2021. He targeted two different victims, exploiting situations where he held a position of control over them.

Sutton pleaded not guilty to the charges during proceedings at Swansea Crown Court. Despite his denial, a jury found him guilty on both counts of rape. Sentencing occurred this week, resulting in an extended sentence of 18 years, reflecting the severity of the crimes and the ongoing risk he poses.

Detective Constable Gary Willis-Hill of South Wales Police commented on the case, stating: 'Johnathan Sutton was clearly a dangerous man who preyed upon victims when he felt he was in a position of control upon them. By pleading not guilty to these crimes, he has shown that he has no remorse for his actions, and the impact which his actions have had upon the lives and wellbeing of his victims. He is now going to be behind bars for a very considerable amount of time.' This conviction underscores the police force's commitment to pursuing justice for sexual offences in the region.

The offences were investigated by South Wales Police, who highlighted the profound effects on the victims' lives. Sutton's actions demonstrate a pattern of predatory behaviour, and the extended sentence ensures his removal from society for an extended period to protect the public.
