Peter Kirk, a 78-year-old resident of Surrey, has been sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment for a series of serious sexual offences committed against two young girls. The case, which came to light through the bravery of the victims, highlights the long-term impact of historic child sexual abuse and the importance of reporting such crimes.

Kirk, from Mill Road in South Holmwood, Dorking, stood trial at Guildford Crown Court. Following a thorough investigation by Surrey Police, a jury found him guilty of 15 sex offences. These included six counts of rape and three charges related to historic abuse, underscoring the prolonged nature of the exploitation. The offences involved Kirk taking advantage of the vulnerability of his two young victims, subjecting them to repeated sexual abuse over an extended period.

Detective Constable James Chapman of Surrey Police commended the victims' courage in coming forward. In a statement, he said: 'This sentence reflects the severity of the offences committed by this man who took advantage of two young girls. I hope it will, to some extent, help the victims begin to move on with their lives and feel justice has been served.' Chapman further praised the victims, noting: 'Both victims must be commended for their bravery in coming forward and it is thanks to their courage that others will be protected from this man for some time. I am grateful that the victims placed their trust in Surrey Police and enabled my team to investigate the allegations.'

The sentencing took place on Friday at Guildford Crown Court, with Kirk required to sign the sex offenders register for life as an additional measure to protect the public.
