Offence Summary

Phillip Wright possessed over 5,000 indecent images of children, including severe category A images depicting child rape, and shared some with other offenders online. He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Chester Crown Court.

Full Description

Phillip Wright, a 33-year-old resident of Runcorn, Cheshire, was sentenced at Chester Crown Court for possessing and distributing a vast collection of child sexual abuse material. The case came to light following an investigation by Cheshire Police, who uncovered more than 5,195 indecent images of children on Wright's electronic devices. These images, amassed between May 2023 and 31 October 2023, included 2,971 category A images—the most severe classification involving penetrative sexual abuse and rape of children—as well as 1,006 category B and 1,219 category C images.

Prosecutor Catherine Elvin detailed during the hearing how Wright not only collected this depraved material but also actively distributed some of it to other paedophiles online. In addition to the indecent images, officers discovered 12 prohibited non-photographic videos of child abuse, such as computer-generated images and cartoons, along with six extreme pornographic images depicting sexual acts between humans and animals, which were described in court as 'offensive, disgusting, or obscene'.

Wright pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children, three counts of making them, and one count of distributing them. He was also convicted on single counts of possessing prohibited images of children and possessing extreme pornographic images involving animals. Judge Patrick Thompson, presiding over the case, deemed the offences far too serious for any penalty short of immediate custody. Addressing Wright, the judge stated that the scale and severity of the material warranted a custodial sentence.

As a result, Wright, from Grangemoor in Runcorn, was jailed for two years and eight months. He was further required to sign the sex offenders' register for life and comply with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. The court also approved an order to deprive him of the electronic devices containing the illicit material. This sentencing reflects the gravity with which UK courts treat child sexual exploitation offences, as reported by local sources including the Runcorn and Widnes World.
