Full Description

Iain McLean Smith, also known as Michael McLean, a 79-year-old resident of Glasgow, was involved in a paedophile sting operation in Stirling. Smith, who worked as a stadium announcer for Stranraer FC and as a DJ for Quality FM, a station based at a secondary school in Paisley, admitted to attempting to communicate indecently with a child between January and February 2025.

Smith believed he was chatting online with a teenager aged 13 to 16, but the individual was actually an adult decoy. During the conversations on Cowane Street in Stirling, he made explicit sexual remarks, enquired about masturbation, discussed his own sexual encounters, and expressed intentions to demonstrate sexual acts to the 'teenager' once they turned 16. He also induced the decoy to masturbate, leading to his guilty plea on the charge.

At Stirling Sheriff Court, Sheriff Euan Gosney imposed a two-year supervision order on Smith, explicitly stating, 'Be under no doubt that this is a direct alternative to custody.' Additional restrictions included a ban on contact with children under 16, prohibition on deleting internet or phone chat history, and a ban on using software to hide his identity. Smith was placed on the sex offenders register for two years. The case was reported by The Courier in their Stirling court round-up on 13 November 2025.
