Full Description

A Cambridgeshire man, Elton Townend-Jones, has had his prison sentence significantly increased for committing a series of depraved sexual offences against a young girl. The case, referred under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme by the Solicitor General, highlights the severity of child sex abuse crimes and the justice system's commitment to ensuring appropriate punishment.

Townend-Jones, aged 52 at the time of sentencing, engaged in a sustained course of sexual abuse against the victim when she was between the ages of 10 and 14. The offences included raping the child and at least 25 separate assaults by penetration, all occurring while the victim was under the age of 13. These acts were described in court as a 'sustained and depraved course of sexual abuse', underscoring the profound harm inflicted on the young victim.

Initially, on 23 March 2022, Townend-Jones was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to a Special Custodial Sentence of 14 years' imprisonment, accompanied by a 1-year extended licence period. However, the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk QC MP, believed this penalty did not adequately reflect the gravity of the crimes. He referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, a mechanism allowing for review of sentences deemed too light.

On 6 May 2022, the sentence was first adjusted by Cambridge Crown Court to 17 years' imprisonment with the same 1-year extended licence. This was further reviewed by the Court of Appeal. On 30 June 2022, the appellate court unanimously determined that the original 14-year term was unduly lenient and increased it to 20 years' imprisonment, maintaining the 1-year extended licence. This final decision ensures Townend-Jones will spend considerably longer behind bars for his heinous actions.

Speaking after the Court of Appeal hearing, the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk QC MP, stated: 'Elton Townend-Jones engaged in a sustained and depraved course of sexual abuse against a child. I believed that his crimes warranted a stronger punishment, so I welcome the decision of the Court of Appeal to increase his sentence today.' The case was handled by the Attorney General's Office, with proceedings taking place under the 2019 to 2022 Johnson Conservative government. This outcome serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences for perpetrators of child sex offences.
