Offence Summary

James Rennie, a former youth worker and teacher, was a ringleader of Scotland's largest paedophile network, where he abused his godson starting from the age of three months and conspired to abuse children while distributing child abuse material.

Full Description

James Rennie, aged 38 and from Edinburgh, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years at the High Court in Edinburgh for his role as a ringleader in Scotland's biggest paedophile gang. Once a respected coordinator of LGBT Youth Scotland and a former teacher, Rennie exploited his position of trust to perpetrate heinous acts against vulnerable children.

The network, uncovered through Operation Algebra by Lothian and Borders Police in 2007, involved eight men who amassed 125,000 images and videos of child abuse. Rennie was convicted of 14 offences, including the repeated molestation of a young boy known as Child F, who was his godson, over a four-year period beginning when the child was just three months old. Judge Lord Bannatyne described the betrayal as 'truly appalling,' noting that Rennie's victims' parents had welcomed him into their lives, making him the child's godfather and entrusting him with their care, only for him to breach that trust in the grossest manner.

Bannatyne likened Rennie to a spider 'weaving an electronic web' to orchestrate the conspiracy, using sophisticated online methods to distribute material and coordinate abuses. The investigation employed advanced techniques, including US-pioneered digital camera identification and Microsoft email recovery via court warrants, alongside wi-fi tracking at Rennie's home. In addition to his custodial sentence, Rennie received a lifelong restriction order, ensuring ongoing risk assessment and management, and was banned from working with children.

The board of LGBT Youth Scotland expressed profound shock, stating they 'whole-heartedly welcomed' the convictions and abhorred any abuse of children, highlighting the betrayal of their organisational values. Rennie's actions formed part of a broader conspiracy that shocked the public, with the judge emphasising the 'gross and appalling breaches of trust' involved.
