Offence Summary

Former teacher Tyrone Murray Castles was sentenced to 25 years in prison for a series of historic sexual offences against young boys committed in the late 1980s and early 1990s while teaching at Glebe House School in Hunstanton.

Full Description

A former teacher has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse against young boys during his time at a school in Norfolk. Dr Tyrone Murray Castles, aged 59 and residing in Dockray, Penrith, Cumbria, appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Friday, where he received the custodial sentence for multiple historic sex offences.

The offences, which involved five victims, occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s while Castles was employed as a teacher at Glebe House School in Hunstanton. He admitted to a number of counts of indecent assault on boys under 14 years of age, as well as two serious sexual offences against one boy. Prosecuting barrister Philip Farr described the abuse as a meticulously planned campaign targeting vulnerable children, noting that Castles exploited his position of trust and popularity among pupils.

One victim likened Castles to a 'Pied Piper' figure, popular with students but who left him feeling trapped, isolated, and unable to seek help. In an impact statement, the victim recounted the lasting trauma, describing the abuse as a 'black cloud' that had overshadowed his life. The court heard that Castles later became headteacher at Earlham High School in Norwich, though none of the charges related to that period.

Sentencing Judge Andrew Shaw remarked on the stark contrast between Castles' public persona and his true nature. 'Anyone looking at a history of your life would conclude that from the ages of 30 until your late 50s you were a virtuous family man, a hard-working man, someone to whom others looked up to. The reality is that for nearly all your married life you have been concealing a lie. You have been concealing a monster,' the judge stated. Castles displayed no emotion during the proceedings.

In addition to the 25-year sentence, comprising 24 years in custody and one year on extended licence, Castles was placed on the sex offenders' register for life and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order. Defending barrister David Wales expressed Castles' remorse, stating, 'He is aware of the harm that has been caused to his victims. He is aware of the damage he has done. He is going to carry that knowledge with him to his grave.' The case was reported by the Eastern Daily Press, with details emerging from Norfolk Constabulary investigations into historic child sex offences.
