Offence Summary

Nigel Peter Grigg, a 69-year-old man from Poole, was jailed for five years after attempting to arrange a child sex offence by communicating on the Kik messaging platform with an undercover police officer posing as a father offering his fictional daughter for sexual activities.

Full Description

Nigel Peter Grigg, aged 69 and residing in Croft Road, Poole, has been sentenced to five years in prison for arranging or facilitating a child sex offence. The case, which unfolded between 4 March and 12 March of the previous year, highlights the dangers of online grooming and the proactive role of law enforcement in preventing child exploitation.

Grigg used the messaging platform Kik under the display name 'Randy Peter' to communicate with an individual he believed was a father willing to provide his daughter for sexual activities. Unbeknownst to Grigg, this person was an undercover police officer, and the 'daughter' was entirely fictional. During these exchanges, Grigg boasted about having sexually assaulted a 13-year-old in Thailand, demonstrating his dangerous intentions towards children.

Grigg arranged to meet the supposed father and daughter with the explicit aim of committing child sex offences. His activities came to light through an investigation by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit, in collaboration with Dorset Police's Paedophile Online Investigation Team, who were targeting paedophile activity on the Kik platform.

At Bournemouth Crown Court, Grigg admitted to the single charge of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence. Judge Robert Pawson deemed him a dangerous offender, sentencing him to five years' imprisonment along with a two-year extended licence period to protect the public from further harm.

The NSPCC, a leading children's charity, condemned Grigg's actions as 'harrowing', emphasising that although the victim in this instance was fictional, his intentions posed a real threat to children. A spokesperson for the NSPCC stated: 'This case is just another example of offenders using social media as a vehicle to abuse children.' The organisation has called for stronger government intervention, including a comprehensive Online Safety Bill, to compel social media platforms to prevent such predatory behaviour.
