Offence Summary

Michael Wesley Higgins, a serial rapist, was jailed for 17 years for raping and sexually abusing a young girl in the 1980s.

Full Description

Michael Wesley Higgins, 65, from St Asaph, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after being found guilty of 10 counts of sexual assault against a young girl more than 30 years ago. Higgins denied the charges but was convicted by a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court on January 19, 2018.

The court heard that Higgins had a prior conviction in 1975 for raping three women, along with robbery and assault charges. Despite the victim's initial complaint in the late 1980s, no action was taken until she reported again in 2015, leading to his arrest and trial. This conviction holds him accountable for the abuse that began over three decades ago.

Prosecuted by North Wales Police, the case emphasises the importance of revisiting historical complaints to deliver justice for survivors of sexual abuse.
