Offence Summary

Wayne Barry Williams, a paedophile, sent explicit images and videos to a fake online profile of a 13-year-old girl and attempted to solicit sexual photographs from her, just six days after his release from prison. He was subsequently jailed for two years and six months at Mold Crown Court.

Full Description

A convicted paedophile, Wayne Barry Williams, of Beach Road, Bangor, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after admitting to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. The incident came to light in December 2023 when a paedophile hunter group, operating a decoy online profile posing as a 13-year-old girl, reported suspicious activity to North Wales Police.

Williams, aged 34, sent a friend request to the fake profile and quickly escalated his communications by messaging the account and requesting sexual photographs. He also sent explicit images and videos of himself, demonstrating a clear intent to groom and exploit the supposed child. This behaviour occurred merely six days after Williams had been released from prison for a previous offence, leading to his immediate arrest and recall to custody for breaching his licence conditions.

The case was heard at Mold Crown Court on Thursday, 16 January 2025, where Williams pleaded guilty to the charges. In addition to his custodial sentence, he was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to protect the public from further harm. Detective Constable Jamie Atkinson of North Wales Police commented on the case, stating: “Williams has proved to be a threat to women and girls by immediately offending after being released from prison. It is lucky on this occasion that the victim was a decoy, or the consequences could have been devastating.” This incident underscores the ongoing efforts under Operation Unite, North Wales Police's initiative to combat violence against women and girls.

The swift action by the paedophile hunter group and the police highlights the importance of community vigilance in preventing child sexual exploitation online. Williams's prior conviction and rapid reoffending emphasise the challenges in rehabilitating such offenders and the necessity of robust monitoring post-release.
