Offence Summary

Former councillor William Kirkbride was jailed for 28 months after sending explicit sexual messages to an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old boy on the Grindr dating app and arranging to meet for sexual activity.

Full Description

William Kirkbride, a 57-year-old former Labour councillor on Copeland Borough Council, has been imprisoned for his predatory behaviour towards what he believed was a 14-year-old boy. The incident unfolded in October 2021 when Kirkbride initiated contact via the Grindr dating app, quickly steering the conversation towards explicit sexual content. Despite being informed multiple times of the 'boy's' age, Kirkbride persisted, dismissing legal concerns with the remark, 'The law is clear on that but who follows the law these days?'

At Carlisle Crown Court, details emerged of how Kirkbride, residing on Queen Street in Whitehaven, Cumbria, arranged to meet the supposed minor at Whitehaven train station on 27 October 2021. Upon arrival, he was arrested by two police officers. In the police vehicle, Kirkbride candidly admitted his guilt, stating, 'Well I'm bang to rights aren't I? You've got me guv. Am I going to be in Durham for Christmas?' During his police interview, he initially claimed to believe the individual was over 18 but later pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, acknowledging that sexual touching was intended and that he believed the boy to be under 16.

Sentencing occurred on Friday, 10 June 2022, where Recorder Ian Unsworth QC described Kirkbride as a 'predatory paedophile'. He was jailed for 28 months, ordered to abide by a sexual harm prevention order, and required to sign the sex offenders' register indefinitely. The case highlights the dangers of online grooming and the effectiveness of undercover operations by Cumbria Police in preventing child sexual exploitation.

This incident follows earlier related coverage, including Kirkbride's admission of the offence in May 2022 and his initial denial in February 2022. The court proceedings were handled under HM Courts Service, with the case reported by BBC News.
