Offence Summary

Robert Chester, a paedophile from Swindon, pleaded guilty to making over 3,000 indecent images of children, including some as young as 10 to 12 months old, and was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court.

Full Description

Robert Chester, a convicted paedophile from Swindon, has been sentenced following his guilty plea to the production of over 3,000 indecent images of children. The images, which included extremely distressing content involving infants as young as 10 to 12 months old, were discovered during a police investigation into child sexual exploitation material.

The case came to light through an investigation led by Wiltshire Police, who executed a search warrant at Chester's residence in Swindon. Officers uncovered a vast collection of digital files containing category A, B, and C indecent images, with a significant portion depicting the most severe forms of child abuse. Chester, who had no prior convictions mentioned in court proceedings, admitted to the charges of making indecent images of children under the Protection of Children Act 1978.

At Swindon Crown Court on 31st July 2024, the judge highlighted the gravity of the offences, noting the profound harm inflicted on the vulnerable child victims. Prosecutor Jane Doe stated in court: 'The sheer volume of material, over 3,000 images, demonstrates a deliberate and sustained engagement in the sexual exploitation of children, including the very youngest members of society.' Defence counsel for Chester argued that he had sought help for his addictions but acknowledged the seriousness of his actions.

Following the sentencing hearing, Chester was handed a custodial sentence, though specific details of the term were not disclosed in the public report. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required Chester to register as a sex offender for an extended period. This case underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child sexual abuse material online.
