Offence Summary

Gareth Viccars, a football referee, was jailed for 14 years after pleading guilty to 16 child sex offences against three underage girls, including grooming and sexually abusing a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Romford.

Full Description

Gareth Viccars, a 47-year-old assistant referee in the English Football League, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for committing 16 child sex offences against three underage victims. Viccars, who had officiated professional matches since the 2018-19 season and served as a referee for over 25 years, used social media platforms like Snapchat to groom and exploit young girls.

The court heard that Viccars began targeting a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Romford in November 2021. After just four days of messaging, he drove from his home in Milton Keynes to pick her up after school and engaged in sexual activity with her. He manipulated the girl by convincing her they were in a loving relationship, pressuring her into further sexual encounters. Viccars referred to himself as 'dad' and the girls as 'little girls' in his communications, highlighting the manipulative nature of his grooming tactics.

While maintaining this abusive relationship, Viccars went on to commit additional sex offences against two other underage girls. The Metropolitan Police investigated after reports emerged of his predatory behaviour. Viccars pleaded guilty to the charges during the trial at court in October, leading to his imprisonment. The case underscores the dangers of online grooming by individuals in positions of trust, such as sports officials.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Viccars's actions involved deliberate manipulation and exploitation of vulnerable children. The sentencing reflects the severity of the offences, with the judge emphasising the long-term harm caused to the victims.
