Offence Summary

Kieran Harris raped the victims twice and was convicted of two counts of rape.

Full Description

Kieran Harris, 28, from Fir Parade in Dewsbury, was among nine men jailed for raping and abusing two teenage girls from a children's home, with his convictions including two counts of rape. The exploitation began in 2008 when the victims were 14, involving grooming through alcohol, drugs, and threats as described in the Bradford Crown Court proceedings.

Prosecutor Karma Melly QC detailed during the extended trial how Harris and others used the girls' vulnerability to their advantage, sometimes through forceful means. The abuses were reported in 2014 by Fiona Goddard after she recognised parallels with the Rotherham grooming cases broadcast on BBC Look North, leading to police action by West Yorkshire Police.

Sentenced to 17 years by Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, Harris was part of a group criticised for lacking respect for decent standards. The judge praised Goddard's bravery in court, where she stated: 'Your primary victim sits in court and that lady has shown the utmost courage.' Goddard affirmed her decision to speak out to support others facing similar traumas.

The case prompted statements from Bradford Council on reviewing safeguarding practices and from Nazir Afzal on the need for better resources to prevent future failures in protecting children from sexual exploitation.
