Full Description

David Robert Welham, a 36-year-old man from Whitby, North Yorkshire, was sentenced at York Crown Court for sexually assaulting a woman in the early hours of August 9, 2024. The incident occurred when Welham forced himself upon the victim, leading to his immediate arrest by North Yorkshire Police on the same day.

Welham, residing on Abbots Road in Whitby, was charged with sexual assault. He denied the allegations of sexual misconduct through multiple court hearings, maintaining his innocence until the last possible moment. However, just minutes before he was due to stand trial this week at York Crown Court, Welham changed his plea to guilty, acknowledging his actions.

The court imposed a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, on the condition that Welham complete 200 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and subjected to a five-year restraining order to protect the victim from further contact or harm, restricting his movements and activities accordingly.

Police Staff Investigator Dexy Clarkson from Scarborough and Ryedale CID commented on the case, stating: 'Welham finally admitted his guilt to sexually assaulting the woman and has been dealt with by the courts. I hope the victim can now begin to move on from this deeply upsetting experience. I have nothing but praise for her bravery throughout this case.' North Yorkshire Police praised the victim's courage, particularly in light of the last-minute plea change.

The case was reported by the York Press, highlighting the swift police response and the judicial outcome aimed at rehabilitation and victim protection.
