Offence Summary

Rashid Iqbal was convicted of sexually abusing a young girl aged 13 to 15 in Huddersfield between 2003 and 2005, and was jailed for 12 years at Leeds Crown Court.

Full Description

Rashid Iqbal, a 46-year-old man from Dryclough Road in Huddersfield, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following his conviction for serious sexual offences against a young girl. The case forms part of the extensive Operation Tendersea investigation, which has been probing historical child sexual exploitation in the Huddersfield area for several years. Iqbal's prosecution is one of the latest outcomes from this ongoing operation, led by West Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The offences occurred between 2003 and 2005, during which time Iqbal, who was an adult, targeted and abused a vulnerable girl then aged between 13 and 15. The court heard detailed evidence during a four-day trial at Leeds Crown Court, where Iqbal was found guilty of two counts of causing or inciting a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity and two counts of indecency with a child under 14. The abuse took place within the Huddersfield area, exploiting the victim's youth and vulnerability in what was described as targeted and depraved behaviour.

Iqbal was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on a date shortly following the trial's conclusion last week. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Thornes, of the Kirklees District Safeguarding Unit, commented on the case, stating: 'Iqbal richly deserves the sentences given to him at court for what was targeted and depraved sexual offending against a child. He took advantage of her vulnerability in the worst way.' Thornes also praised the victim's courage in coming forward to support the prosecution, which has resulted in removing a child sex offender from the streets.

Operation Tendersea continues to investigate non-recent child sexual exploitation cases in Huddersfield, with authorities committed to pursuing justice for all victims. The investigation underscores the long-term efforts by West Yorkshire Police to address historical abuses and support those affected.
