Offence Summary

Arwyn Cellan Thomas was convicted of multiple historic child sexual abuse offences, including rape and indecent assault of children under 13, and sentenced to 22 years in prison after collapsing in the dock at Swansea Crown Court.

Full Description

Arwyn Cellan Thomas, a 49-year-old man from Morriston in Swansea, was convicted at Swansea Crown Court of 15 serious charges related to the historic sexual abuse of several children. The offences, which spanned multiple years, involved systematic and escalating abuse targeting young victims of similar ages, demonstrating a clear sexual interest in children of a particular age group.

Thomas, formerly of Llanelli, had pleaded not guilty to the charges but was found guilty following a trial that concluded on 17 January. The charges included five counts of indecent assault, six counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, three counts of rape of a child under the age of 13, and one count of assault of a child under 13 by penetration. These acts were described by the court as 'monstrous' and 'cynical', with the judge noting that Thomas had forced his victims to relive their trauma during the proceedings.

  • The abuse began with initial sexual assaults and escalated to rape and penetration.
  • Victims provided impact statements detailing long-term effects, including flashbacks and shame.
  • The court was cleared when Thomas collapsed upon hearing his sentence.

Sentencing took place on 8 February at Swansea Crown Court. Judge Paul Thomas QC addressed Thomas directly, stating: 'The way in which you abused these children was simply monstrous, and I choose my words carefully. You systematically and cynically started to sexually abuse them. The similar ages of your victims points to, in my view, a sexual interest of a particular age. Your sexual abuse stopped at around the same ages. There was an escalation in what you did. You behaved in a quite awful fashion . . . and your victims' lives have been so badly affected.' The judge characterised Thomas as a 'devious' and 'controlling' individual.

Thomas was sentenced to 22 years' imprisonment, with an additional six-year extended licence period. He must serve at least two-thirds of the custodial term before being eligible for parole. The case was investigated by Dyfed-Powys Police, who provided evidence leading to the conviction. Reports from Wales Online and IBTimes UK detailed the proceedings, highlighting the severity of the offences and their profound impact on the survivors.
