A former Nottinghamshire Police officer, Lee Bowditch, has pleaded guilty to serious child sex offences, marking a significant fall from grace for the 49-year-old from Radcliffe-on-Trent. Bowditch, who served as an officer in Newark, was arrested in April 2018 after engaging in inappropriate online communications with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl on a dating site. During these interactions in a private chat room, he sent an indecent image and explicit sexual messages to the individual.
In addition to the grooming-related charges, Bowditch admitted to downloading indecent images of children categorised as the most serious level by authorities. He pleaded guilty to four charges in total at Leicester Crown Court: two counts of attempting to engage a child in sexual communication and two counts of making indecent images of children. The offences came to light through an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police, who described the material as 'repulsive'.
Chief Constable Craig Guildford of Nottinghamshire Police condemned Bowditch's actions in a strongly worded statement, calling him a 'disgrace to the uniform and the community alike'. Guildford highlighted the betrayal of public trust, noting that Bowditch committed these acts while still serving as an officer. 'He admitted to downloading the most serious categorisation of indecent child images,' Guildford said. 'Rather than safeguarding the vulnerable and seeking to stop such activity wherever it may present, a quest all our officers would want to undertake with all their energies, he participated in this repulsive criminal endeavour.'
Following his arrest, Bowditch was immediately suspended from duty and subsequently retired from the force in October 2018. A special case hearing conducted by Nottinghamshire Police found him guilty of gross misconduct, ruling that he would have been dismissed had he remained in service. As a result, he has been added to the barred list, preventing him from working in policing or certain law enforcement roles in the future. Bowditch is scheduled to be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on 12 March 2019, where the full extent of his punishment will be determined.
This case underscores the vulnerabilities within law enforcement and the importance of robust safeguarding measures. Nottinghamshire Police emphasised their commitment to protecting children and pursuing those who exploit them, with the force's investigation playing a key role in bringing Bowditch to justice. The story was reported by BBC News on 15 January 2019, drawing from official statements by Nottinghamshire Police and court records.
