Offence Summary

Juliana Oluronbi, wife of the main offender, aided and abetted rapes by helping arrange terminations for pregnant victims and was jailed for 11 years.

Full Description

Juliana Oluronbi, the wife of convicted rapist Michael Oluronbi, was found guilty of three counts of aiding and abetting rape in connection with her husband's 20-year campaign of sexual abuse against church members. As a participant in covering up the crimes, she assisted in arranging terminations for young female victims who became pregnant multiple times due to the rapes committed by her husband. Her actions enabled the continuation of the abuse within their Birmingham-based splinter church group, where Michael Oluronbi posed as a prophet conducting 'spiritual baths'.

The trial at Birmingham Crown Court revealed Juliana's direct involvement in concealing the pregnancies resulting from at least 88 rapes, which affected six women and one man, including children. This complicity was part of a broader pattern of control exerted by the couple over their congregation. Following Michael's conviction in January 2020, Juliana was sentenced alongside him on 6 March 2020.

  • Prosecutors detailed how Juliana, as a qualified pharmacist's wife, helped facilitate abortions to hide the evidence of the sexual offences.
  • Like her husband, she will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for life.
  • The case was brought to justice through West Midlands Police investigations after a victim's disclosure.

Judge Sarah Buckingham highlighted the severity of the couple's actions during sentencing, noting the profound impact on victims. The Daily Mail article from 6 March 2020, based on court reports, underscores Juliana's role in one of the most egregious cases of prolonged sexual abuse heard in the courts.
