Offence Summary

Vincent Middlebrough, a 46-year-old man from Leeds, was arrested after travelling to Stockton to meet who he believed was a 14-year-old boy for sexual purposes, only to discover it was an undercover police officer. He was sentenced to ten months in prison for multiple child sex offences, including grooming and possession of indecent images.

Full Description

Vincent Middlebrough, a 46-year-old resident of West View, Micklefield, Leeds, engaged in a series of sexually explicit communications with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old boy, arranging to meet for sexual activity. Unbeknownst to him, the 'boy' was an undercover officer from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU). On 4 July 2024, Middlebrough travelled to Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, where he was arrested upon arrival.

At Teesside Crown Court, the court heard details of Middlebrough's actions, including the explicit messages he sent and his journey to meet the supposed child. Following his arrest, investigating officers seized his electronic devices, uncovering a collection of indecent images and videos of children. These findings led to further enquiries and the discovery of additional evidence of his online predatory behaviour.

Middlebrough was charged with making indecent images of a child, two counts of engaging in sexual communication with a child, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, and attempting to meet a child following grooming. He pleaded guilty to all charges during the proceedings at Teesside Crown Court.

In sentencing, the court imposed a ten-month custodial sentence on Middlebrough, along with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future activities and protect the public, particularly vulnerable children. The case was handled by NEROCU as part of their Operation Sentinel initiative aimed at combating online child abuse and sexual exploitation.

NEROCU Detective Constable Grace Wass commented on the case, stating: “This has been just the latest example of our dedication to protect those vulnerable in our communities. Our investigation didn’t end with an arrest - we continued to pursue enquiries and safeguard any vulnerable children involved.” The operation underscores the unit's commitment to tackling such offences through proactive policing and collaboration with partners.
