Full Description

A jury at Carlisle Crown Court has convicted 57-year-old Andrew Philip Burrows of multiple serious sex offences against children, including rape, after a trial that concluded with 23 guilty verdicts out of 31 charges. Burrows, from Chapel Close in West Woodburn, had denied all allegations but was found guilty of nine rapes, several instances of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and other child sex offences. The judge described the evidence leading to these convictions as compelling.

The trial, reported by the Hexham Courant, highlighted the severity of the crimes, with Judge Nicholas Barker warning Burrows immediately after the verdicts that he faces a substantial period of imprisonment. 'You understand now that the court will only consider a sentence of custody. Such a sentence will be one of some duration,' the judge stated directly to the defendant. Burrows was remanded in custody pending sentencing scheduled for 10 June.

Burrows' barrister, Judith McCullough, acknowledged the inevitability of a lengthy prison term, stating, 'He was aware there could be only one form of sentence for the offending he was now convicted of: “A very lengthy term in prison.”' She noted Burrows' lifelong struggle with depression and requested a pre-sentence report to provide background context. In addition to the impending custodial sentence, Judge Barker ordered Burrows' name to be entered on the Sex Offender Register, likely for life, underscoring the gravity of the offences.

The case, prosecuted at Carlisle Crown Court, involved eight allegations cleared on the judge's direction. The jury's deliberations were thanked by the judge, who expressed sympathy for the distressing nature of the evidence they reviewed. This conviction marks a significant outcome in addressing child sex offences in the region, with full sentencing details to follow on the set date.
