Offence Summary

James Sands, a former employee at St Christopher School in Letchworth, was jailed for five years and three months after being convicted of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence involving a child under 13. He was also charged with publishing an obscene article, though that charge was ordered to lie on file.

Full Description

James Sands, a 47-year-old man from High Street in Hertford, Hertfordshire, was employed at St Christopher School in Letchworth from 2018 to 2023. The school, an independent boarding institution, has recently come under scrutiny due to allegations of historic sexual abuse spanning the 1960s to 1990s, but Sands' offences were confirmed by police to be wholly unconnected to his role there.

In January 2025, Sands was charged with two serious offences: publishing an obscene article and arranging or facilitating the commission to cause or incite a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. The second charge related to an incident that occurred in June 2023. Following his arrest, the school immediately suspended him and ensured he had no further contact with pupils, adhering to all safeguarding protocols and notifying relevant authorities including the Local Authority Designated Officer, the Teaching Regulation Agency, the Charity Commission, and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

On 9 May 2025, Sands appeared at St Albans Crown Court, where he was sentenced to five years and three months' imprisonment for the child sex offence. The charge of publishing an obscene article was ordered to lie on file. In addition to his custodial sentence, Sands was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life, placed on the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely, and barred from working with children for life.

A spokesperson for St Christopher School described the crimes as 'deeply shocking and disturbing' in a statement to The Comet. They emphasised the school's swift response: 'As soon as Hertfordshire Police informed the school about his arrest, we suspended him immediately and ensured he had no further contact with pupils. The police confirmed that his offences were wholly unconnected to the school, and we followed their guidance throughout on what information could be shared about the matter.' The Independent Schools Inspectorate recently confirmed that the school's safeguarding arrangements are rigorous and effective.

Meanwhile, the broader context at St Christopher School involves a reopened police investigation into historic abuse allegations, including rape, sexual assault, neglect, and other mistreatment by teachers and pupils in past decades. Headteacher Rich Jones stated: 'We are desperately sorry to learn of these profoundly distressing and shocking allegations, and we are grateful to those who have courageously come forward.' Hertfordshire Police have specialist officers supporting survivors in this ongoing case.
