Offence Summary

Aashit Patel pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a 14-year-old girl in Romford following grooming and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child after sending sexual messages to a decoy account and travelling to meet who he believed was the minor.

Full Description

Aashit Patel, a 31-year-old man from Hengest Avenue in Esher, north Surrey, has admitted to serious sexual offences involving the grooming of a child. On August 19, 2023, Patel was arrested by police in Romford after being apprehended by paedophile hunters. He had sent explicit sexual messages to what he believed was a 14-year-old girl's account, which was actually a decoy operated by the hunters.

Patel travelled from his home in Surrey to Romford, east London, with the intention of meeting the girl in person following weeks of online grooming. The decoy account was set up to expose individuals attempting to exploit children, and Patel's actions were quickly reported to the authorities upon his arrival at the arranged meeting spot.

On March 13, 2024, Patel appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to two charges: attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. These offences fall under UK legislation aimed at protecting minors from online predators.

Following his guilty plea, Patel was released on conditional bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court at a later date, where the court will determine the appropriate punishment for his actions. The case highlights the ongoing efforts by paedophile hunter groups and law enforcement to safeguard children from sexual exploitation in the digital age.
