Offence Summary

Convicted paedophile Shem Jones travelled from Wales to the North East to meet a child for sex and groomed another child online, sending indecent images and discussing involvement in a child sex ring.

Full Description

Shem Jones, a 39-year-old convicted paedophile from Wind Street, Llandysul, Ceredigion, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court for a series of child sex offences. Jones travelled seven hours from his home in Wales to the North East in June 2021, believing he was meeting a nine-year-old child after exchanging messages with who he thought was the child's mother. In reality, he was communicating with an undercover officer from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU).

The court heard that Jones and the officer exchanged numerous messages detailing his intentions to involve the child in a child sex ring. Jones sent multiple indecent photos and short videos of other children during these communications. Following the exposure of his plans, officers launched a specialist operation, arresting Jones at the agreed meeting point upon his arrival.

Post-arrest, the investigation was handed over to Northumbria Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT). Examination of Jones's laptop revealed over 400 images of child abuse and illegal imagery. He was charged with arranging the commission of a child sex offence and three counts of distributing indecent images of a child. Further charges included seven offences of engaging in sexual activity with a child, meeting a child following sexual grooming, and multiple counts of taking and making indecent images of a child.

Jones pleaded guilty to all charges. Judge at Newcastle Crown Court imposed a total of 12 years imprisonment and an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, highlighting the despicable nature of his actions. The case underscores the vigilance of regional police units in combating online grooming and child exploitation.
