Full Description

A 41-year-old man from Middlesbrough, Ashif Nashaat, who held a position of trust, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison following his conviction for serious sexual offences against children. The case, handled by Cleveland Police, came to light after the offences were reported to authorities via a third party, highlighting the importance of trusted reporting mechanisms in protecting vulnerable individuals.

Nashaat faced trial at Teesside Crown Court, where he was found guilty of attempted rape of a child aged 11 years and attempted rape of a girl over the age of 16. Despite his denial of the charges, the evidence presented led to his conviction. The offences underscore the profound betrayal of trust involved, as Nashaat's position allowed him access to the victims, causing significant emotional harm to the survivor.

Detective Sergeant Gemma Leeming, the officer in charge of the case, commented on the impact: "Nashaat held a position of trust and the survivor has suffered significant emotional harm as a result of his actions." She praised the bravery of the victim in confiding in a trusted adult, which enabled police intervention and support. Leeming also noted the additional trauma endured by the young woman during the court process, where she had to give evidence, and commended her courage. This conviction, according to Leeming, serves as reassurance that justice will be pursued robustly against such perpetrators.

Acting Detective Child Inspector Matthew Waterfield from Cleveland Police's Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adult (CAVA) Unit emphasised the force's commitment to safeguarding: "Our priority is to protect and safeguard the vulnerable while working with our colleagues in the justice system to deal robustly with perpetrators." The sentencing reflects a significant outcome in this regard, with Nashaat also facing additional measures upon release, including a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order to prevent further harm.

The case was reported and investigated by Cleveland Police, with the trial concluding in September 2023 at Teesside Crown Court. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts required to combat child sexual exploitation within communities.
