Offence Summary

Richard Chipchase, a maths teacher, groomed and sexually exploited a vulnerable schoolgirl at Woodchurch High, using manipulation and threats to abuse her.

Full Description

Richard Chipchase, 55, from Welford Avenue, Prenton, abused his position as head of maths at Woodchurch High School in Birkenhead to groom and sexually exploit a vulnerable schoolgirl. His campaign of manipulation included offering cigarettes, McDonald's meals, and car rides to gain her trust, culminating in a sexual assault during one such lift. When she resisted, he locked her in a storeroom and demanded a hug.

The abuse severely impacted the victim's mental health, her relationships with her parents, and her academic performance. The case came to light after concerns were raised about Chipchase's inappropriate behaviour towards another schoolgirl. He admitted four charges of sexual activity with a child at Liverpool Crown Court.

Sentenced to two years and three months in prison, Chipchase's actions were described by the court as a sickening betrayal of trust. The Liverpool Echo reported on 17 July 2021, detailing how his predatory behaviour exploited his authority over students.
