Offence Summary

Stuart Murgatroyd was jailed for four years after admitting to three counts of sexual activity with a child against a teenage girl in the Kirklees area.

Full Description

A man from Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire has been sentenced to four years in prison for committing serious sexual offences against a teenage girl. Stuart Murgatroyd, aged 31, appeared at Leeds Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child. The offences took place in the Kirklees area, and the case was handled by West Yorkshire Police's Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit.

The victim and her family reported the offences to the police on the same day they occurred, prompting a swift response from authorities. Murgatroyd was arrested within hours of the report. He was subsequently charged and first appeared before Leeds Magistrates' Court on 13 May. On 22 September, he entered guilty pleas at Leeds Crown Court, avoiding a full trial for the victim.

Detective Constable Paul Campbell of the Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit commented on the case, stating: 'This has been an awful case in which Murgatroyd took advantage of a teenage girl and then committed serious sexual offences against her. We welcome his guilty plea which spared her the ordeal of a trial but the truth of the matter was that the strength of the evidence against him gave him little option.' DC Campbell also praised the victim's courage, adding: 'I also want to pay tribute to the courage of the victim and her family. They very swiftly reported the offence, leading to Murgatroyd’s rapid arrest, charge and remand, ensuring a sexual predator was very quickly off our streets.'

Following his release from prison, Murgatroyd will be required to sign on the Sex Offenders Register. The case underscores the importance of prompt reporting in achieving justice, as highlighted by the police, who noted the challenges victims face but emphasised the impact of coming forward.
