Full Description

A 57-year-old man from Southampton has been imprisoned for his extensive collection of child sexual abuse material. William McDowall, residing on Shirley Road, was sentenced at court on Friday, 17 June, following his guilty plea to multiple serious charges related to indecent images.

McDowall appeared in court after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child, possessing a prohibited image of a child, and possessing extreme pornographic images depicting sexual acts on an animal. The court imposed a 14-month custodial sentence, and he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for ten years. Additionally, he received a ten-year sentence for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, highlighting the severity of his ongoing risk to society.

The investigation began when officers from the Internet Child Abuse Team arrested McDowall at his home on 30 July 2021. They seized two laptop computers and a hard drive, which forensic examinations later revealed contained 47,517 indecent images amassed between March 2012 and July 2021. Of these, 9,294 were classified as Category A—the most severe—depicting the sexual abuse of babies, toddlers, and teenagers, some as young as 12 months old. The collection also included a small number of images showing acts of bestiality.

During police interviews, McDowall admitted to viewing indecent images online for approximately 20 years, describing himself as a 'lurker' who collected material without actively distributing it. PC Sarah Tickner, who led the investigation for the Internet Child Abuse Team, commented: 'McDowall had an extremely large collection of indecent images, and some of the children depicted were as young as 12 months old. While he expressed regret for his actions, he clearly poses a risk to children, and I am relieved to see that he is now behind bars.'

Upon his release, McDowall will face stringent conditions to mitigate further risks. The case underscores the authorities' commitment to prosecuting offenders and safeguarding children, as stated by PC Tickner: 'We hope that this investigation demonstrates our commitment to keeping children safe in our community and that we will do everything in our power to ensure offenders are prosecuted.' This incident was reported by UKNIP, based on details from the court proceedings and police statements.
