Alexis Von Yates, a 35-year-old former nurse from Ocala, Florida, was caught in the act of sexually abusing her 15-year-old stepson by her husband upon his return from work. The incident occurred on 26 July 2024, as the pair sat on the sofa watching a horror movie in their family home. According to the arrest affidavit, Von Yates had allegedly told the boy she was 'horny' before initiating the abuse, with her own two younger children already asleep in bed.
The stepson later reported to police that Von Yates had been making 'sexual jokes' towards him for about a week prior to the assault, which left him deeply distressed and unable to eat. Her husband discovered the abuse and alerted authorities, leading to Von Yates' arrest. She was initially charged with sexual battery by a person in familial authority, a serious felony, but accepted a plea deal that reduced the charge to lewd or lascivious battery on a child aged 12 to 16, a second-degree felony. She pleaded no contest to the lesser charge in a deal that significantly shortened her potential prison time.
At her sentencing hearing in September 2024, the victim's mother confronted Von Yates in court, labelling her an 'incestuous paedophile' for grooming and violating her son. The mother described Von Yates as a 'coward' for showing no remorse for her 'despicable actions' and noted that the boy's father had not spoken to him since the incident, as reported by Court TV. The judge sentenced Von Yates to two years in state prison, to be followed by two years of community control—a form of house arrest available to felons in Florida, restricting her to approved locations such as home, work, or school. She was also placed on 10 years' probation and ordered to register as a sex offender, with no contact permitted with the victim.
In addition to her custodial sentence, court records from 24 September 2024 reveal that financial penalties were imposed, totalling more than $1,000. These included over $150 to a rape crisis programme, over $150 to a child advocacy programme, and various court costs and fines to support victim services. The conviction led to Von Yates losing her nursing job and licence shortly after her arrest, marking a severe professional and personal downfall. This case, detailed in reports from The Independent and based on Marion County court documents and the arrest affidavit, underscores the gravity of familial sexual exploitation and the legal consequences involved.
