Full Description

Philip Kane, a 46-year-old man from Little Bollington, Cheshire, was sentenced at Chester Crown Court for attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and attempting to cause a child to watch sexual activity. The case originated from Warrington Magistrates' Court, where Kane had pleaded guilty to the charges. The incidents occurred over five days, from 22 October to 26 October 2023, when Kane believed he was chatting online with a 14-year-old boy.

Catherine Elvin, prosecuting, detailed to the court how Kane initiated conversations with the profile, which was actually operated by an adult posing as a child to identify potential sex offenders. Kane expressed his sexual interest by asking the 'boy' if he had many boyfriends and complimented him, calling him 'well fit, beautiful, and sexy'. He admitted to becoming aroused during the chats and expressed desires to cuddle the 'boy' and perform sexual acts with him. Further escalating the offence, Kane sent a photo of himself holding his penis and a video of him performing a sex act on himself.

Judge Patrick Thompson, presiding over the sentencing, determined that the severity of Kane's actions crossed the custody threshold. However, rather than imposing an immediate prison sentence, he opted for a suspended term. Kane, residing on Lymm Road in Little Bollington, received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years. As part of the sentence, he was required to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activity and 200 hours of unpaid community work. Additionally, Kane was ordered to sign the sex offender register for 10 years and comply with a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.

The case highlights efforts to root out individuals seeking to exploit children online, with Kane falling victim to a decoy operation designed to expose such predators. The Warrington Guardian reported on the proceedings, noting the committed nature of the communications and the explicit content shared by the defendant.
