Full Description

A Kurdish refugee from Iraq, Abdullah Jaf, has been jailed following a sexual assault on a young girl at a swimming pool in Greater Manchester. The incident, which occurred at Radcliffe swimming baths, highlights the challenges faced by individuals adapting to new cultural environments after fleeing persecution.

On May 21 of the previous year, Jaf, who had recently arrived in the UK seeking asylum, indecently assaulted a 12-year-old girl while at the public swimming facility. The assault took place shortly after Jaf was granted housing in Radcliffe, following his initial time in London. Jaf, aged 18 at the time of arrival, admitted to the charge of indecent assault at Bolton Crown Court.

During the court proceedings, Jaf pleaded with Judge Derwin Hope not to imprison him, explaining his initial denial of the offence stemmed from fear. He stated that in Iraq, he would have faced torture before prosecution. His barrister, Denis Watson, provided context on Jaf's background, noting his strict Muslim upbringing where men and women did not mix, and swimming pools were segregated by gender. Watson described how Jaf was unprepared for Britain's more liberal culture, where he observed public displays of intimacy and less modest attire, which he was unaccustomed to from his home environment.

Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Hope sentenced Jaf to four months' imprisonment. Additionally, Jaf was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for seven years. Watson highlighted Jaf's positive steps since arriving, including enrolling in a college course, securing employment, and no longer relying on benefits, as well as his uncertain family situation—his father had been imprisoned by Saddam Hussein, and Jaf had not heard from him since the war's end.

The case was heard at Bolton Crown Court, with the prosecuting authority linked to Greater Manchester Police, responsible for the Radcliffe area. This incident underscores the legal consequences of sexual offences in the UK, regardless of cultural differences or personal circumstances.
