Offence Summary

Edward Gratwick, a 68-year-old man from Mitcham, was sentenced to life imprisonment for arranging to travel abroad to rape children and multiple related child sex offences.

Full Description

Edward Gratwick, a 68-year-old resident of Mitcham in south London, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years at Guildford Crown Court for a series of grave child sex offences. Gratwick, who described himself as a 'paedo tourist', engaged in online discussions about the 'prices' for abusing children and made detailed travel arrangements to commit sexual abuse both in the UK and abroad.

The court heard that Gratwick was found guilty of 38 offences, including arranging or attempting to arrange the commission of a child sex offence, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, distributing indecent images of children, and possessing indecent images of children. He sent child pornography to others and planned to abuse specific children, often in coordination with the relatives of the targeted victims. In one particularly disturbing conversation with an individual based in Romania, Gratwick discussed additional costs for a customer to beat a 10-year-old child he claimed to be managing.

Gratwick's arrest occurred in March at Stansted Airport, where he was attempting to board a flight to Romania. Officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) had been tipped off about a UK national discussing online plans to meet and sexually abuse a nine-year-old girl. Upon his arrest, authorities discovered items in his possession that they believed were intended for use in abusing children. The trial at Guildford Crown Court exposed the full extent of his predatory behaviour, which involved facilitating and assisting others in arranging child abuse as well.

The sentencing in January 2026 reflected the severity of Gratwick's crimes, with the judge emphasising the calculated and international nature of his exploitation. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by UK law enforcement to combat child sex tourism and online grooming networks.
