Offence Summary

Yusuf Egberongbe groomed young girls aged 13 to 15 with lifts, alcohol, drugs, and cash, inciting and engaging in sexual activity with them as part of a pattern of child sexual exploitation.

Full Description

Yusuf Egberongbe, a 67-year-old man from Shakespeare Lawn in Leeds, was convicted at Leeds Crown Court on 11 August 2025 for his role in grooming and sexually exploiting underage girls. He was found guilty of inciting sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, and arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence. He was acquitted on another charge of inciting sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15.

The investigation began in August 2021 after a victim disclosed the offences to a family member, leading to Egberongbe's arrest on the same day. Alongside his co-offender Delroy Scott, Egberongbe targeted vulnerable teenage girls by providing lifts, alcohol, drugs, and cash to manipulate and control them, facilitating repeated sexual assaults. The West Yorkshire Police's Leeds District Safeguarding Unit conducted a lengthy probe that uncovered the extent of the exploitation.

Sentencing occurred on 24 October 2025, with Egberongbe receiving a five-year prison term. Like his co-defendant, he must sign the Sex Offenders Register for life. Detective Constable Lynsey Ibbotson remarked: "The crimes committed by Scott and Egberongbe have had an immense impact on their victims' lives. These offenders have caused significant trauma to the victims during their teenage years, a time which should have been full of excitement, fun, and adventure." The sentencing aims to provide some measure of justice and comfort to the affected victims as they progress into adulthood.

This case highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in addressing child sexual exploitation, with Egberongbe's conviction serving as a deterrent to similar perpetrators in the Leeds area. The police continue to emphasise the availability of support for victims, ensuring that those targeted by such predators are not alone in seeking justice.
