Offence Summary

Alhaji Sesay, a former Bristol City goalkeeper, was convicted of raping one woman and attempting to rape two others in nightclub toilets in Bristol and London.

Full Description

Alhaji Sesay, a 22-year-old former professional footballer for Bristol City from Barnfield Gardens in London, was convicted at Bristol Crown Court of serious sexual assaults. Despite his successful career, Sesay targeted vulnerable women in nightclub settings. In one incident, he subjected a woman to a serious assault in the female toilet of a Bristol nightclub, and shortly after his arrest, he attempted to rape another woman in a London nightclub toilet.

Sesay denied all charges but was found guilty after a three-week trial of attempted rape in Bristol and both attempted rape and rape in London. Avon and Somerset Police, along with Metropolitan Police, investigated the cases, with CCTV footage capturing Sesay's actions in the London incident.

  • The assaults involved non-consensual penetration and force against inebriated victims.
  • Judge Michael Cullum described Sesay as a 'brazen sexual predator' during sentencing.

Sesay received a ten-year custodial sentence. The court highlighted his threat to women, leading to indefinite sex offender registration. Bristol Live's 2021 coverage, including images from the incidents, underscores the fall from grace of a talented athlete and the importance of justice in holding predators accountable.

The convictions brought attention to nightclub safety and the predatory behaviour enabled by Sesay's confidence.
