Offence Summary

Peter John Hogan, a maths tutor from Tooting, was jailed for five-and-a-half years after being found guilty of sexually abusing three young female students aged between eight and 13.

Full Description

Peter John Hogan, a 70-year-old private maths tutor from Tooting, London, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for a series of sexual offences against three young girls. The abuses occurred over several years while Hogan was providing private tuition at his home on Brudenell Road. He was convicted at Kingston Crown Court following a 14-day trial, with the guilty verdict delivered by a majority on 9 August 2019.

The court heard that Hogan exploited his position of trust as a tutor to carry out the assaults. The victims were all girls aged between eight and 13 at the time of the offences. Specifically, Hogan was found guilty on four counts of sexual assault of a girl under 13 (aged between 9 and 12), one count of sexual activity with a child over 13, and two counts of indecent assault of a child under 14 (with one victim aged eight). The most recent abuse involved a 13-year-old girl who was assaulted over a three-year period during maths lessons at Hogan's home. This incident was reported to a teacher in June 2016, prompting an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences (CASO) unit.

Further police enquiries uncovered two additional victims. One, now in her late 20s, came forward to assist the investigation; she had been abused at around eight years old between 1995 and 1996. The third victim was also identified through the ongoing probe. Hogan was arrested in June 2016 and, during his police interview, denied all allegations of sexual abuse. He was charged on 16 January 2017 with the specified counts and pleaded not guilty at Kingston Crown Court on 18 March 2017.

Detectives Vicky Wiltshire and Jo Williams from the CASO unit commented on the case, stating: "The victims' parents put their trust in Hogan to teach their children whilst they were under his supervision - he breached that trust in the most abhorrent way." They emphasised the immense distress caused to the victims and their families, expressing hope that the sentence would provide some closure. The officers also noted that Hogan had been teaching children privately for at least 20 years and urged any other potential victims to come forward.

In addition to his custodial sentence, handed down on 23 September 2019, Hogan was issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) prohibiting unsupervised contact with anyone under 18. He will also be subject to lifelong registration on the Sex Offenders Register. The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police, highlighting the ongoing efforts to protect children from sexual exploitation by those in positions of authority.
