Hannah Harris, a 23-year-old teaching assistant from Harrier Mill, Henlow in Bedfordshire, has been sentenced to six years in prison for engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old pupil at a school in Hertfordshire where she worked. The offences occurred between December 2019 and January 2020, during which time Harris, then aged 21, groomed the boy through social media messages and illicit meetings outside school hours.
At St Albans Crown Court, it was revealed that Harris deceived the boy's parents by pretending to be the mother of his fictional girlfriend to facilitate their encounters. She would drive him to supermarkets to purchase his favourite sweets, take him to McDonald's, and even allow him to smoke cannabis in her car. These interactions escalated to Harris having sex with the boy in a supermarket car park, an act for which she was convicted on 7 February following a trial. Harris had denied four charges of sexual activity with a child but was found guilty on one count.
The court heard evidence of prior warnings issued to Harris by a fellow staff member regarding her inappropriate conversations and flirtatious behaviour with pupils, including an incident of 'play fighting'. Despite these cautions, Harris continued her actions, failing to report or screenshot the boy's messages as required by safeguarding protocols. Judge Caroline Wigin described Harris's conduct as a 'devastating' abuse of trust and clear grooming, stating: 'Your conduct has had a devastating effect upon the life of that young man. ' She further noted: 'I find that you disregarded all the warnings that you had ' and that Harris was 'well aware' of her obligations to report the communications.
Harris tricked the boy's parents by posing as the mother of a fictional girlfriend. She exchanged social media messages with the pupil and met him secretly. Encounters included trips to buy sweets, meals at McDonald's, and cannabis use in her vehicle. The sexual activity took place in a supermarket car park. Harris was warned twice about inappropriate behaviour but ignored the advice. The grooming was uncovered in January 2020 when the boy's older brother discovered the relationship, alerting their parents. Harris was arrested and subsequently tried. In her defence, Julia Flanagan argued that the messages and trips were not specifically aimed at sexual exploitation, claiming the boy initiated contact and that Harris did not target him deliberately. Flanagan added that Harris 'bitterly regrets' her involvement and did not intend harm, emphasising the lifelong impact of the conviction: 'This will follow her forever and will be a lifetime punishment. ' However, the judge rejected these mitigations, sentencing Harris on Wednesday to six years' imprisonment, with half to be served in custody and the remainder on licence. She was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
This case, reported by The Independent, highlights serious safeguarding failures in educational settings and the severe consequences of abusing positions of trust. Bedfordshire Police were involved in the investigation, though the offences occurred in Hertfordshire.
