Offence Summary

Colby Hill was convicted of two counts of rape against a woman and sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison at Exeter Crown Court.

Full Description

Colby Hill, a 22-year-old man of no fixed abode in Exeter, Devon, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years' imprisonment following his conviction for serious sexual offences. The case, handled by Devon & Cornwall Police, culminated in a trial at Exeter Crown Court where Hill, also known as Colby Seatherton, was found guilty on two counts of rape of a woman, despite denying the charges.

The trial took place on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, where the jury delivered guilty verdicts after considering the evidence presented. In addition to the rape convictions, Hill had pleaded guilty at the outset of the trial to one count of intentional strangulation and two other non-sexual offences. These admissions were factored into the overall sentencing.

Sentencing occurred on Monday, 30 March 2026, before the court. The judge imposed the eight-and-a-half-year custodial term, extended by one year's licence period upon release, and issued an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim. The decision reflected the severity of the crimes, which involved violent sexual assault and strangulation.

Detective Constable Jay McGhie, who led the investigation for Devon & Cornwall Police, commented on the outcome: 'We welcome the sentence that he has been given which follows Hill’s conviction following a thorough investigation. Today’s positive outcome is a testimony to the strength shown by the victim in this case, not only in coming forward to report this but also for showing great resilience throughout the judicial process.' McGhie emphasised the police force's commitment to supporting victims and investigating such reports diligently.

The offences occurred in Devon, within the jurisdiction of Devon & Cornwall Police, highlighting ongoing efforts to address sexual violence in the region. Hill's lack of fixed address in Exeter was noted during proceedings, underscoring challenges in monitoring such individuals post-conviction.
