Full Description

Sophie Elms, from Royal Wootton Bassett, made headlines as Britain's youngest female convicted paedophile when she was just 17 years old at the time of admitting her crimes. Working as a nursery assistant in Swindon while studying childcare, Elms committed a series of serious sexual offences against young children, though none occurred at her place of work or college.

In 2019, at Swindon Crown Court, Elms pleaded guilty to several charges, including sexual assault of a child by penetration, sexual assault of a child by touching, distributing indecent images of children, possession of indecent images of children, and possession of extreme pornographic images of an animal. The court was told that her actions involved children as young as two, shocking the local community and drawing national attention due to her tender age and the severity of the offences.

She received a custodial sentence of seven years and ten months in prison. Detective Inspector Simon Childe, who led the investigation, commented on the case's impact, stating it had 'shocked the local community as well as those further afield.' He highlighted Elms' age of 18 at conviction and her disturbing ambition to work with young children, praising his team's efforts in preventing her from doing so in the future. The families of the victims demonstrated remarkable strength, receiving ongoing specialist support.

One affected parent described the impact as 'unimaginable' and 'horrific' during the sentencing hearing. Now, six years into her sentence, Elms is scheduled for release in September under strict licence conditions, including a prohibition from returning to the area of her offences and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to ensure close monitoring post-release.
