Full Description

William Cottam, a 60-year-old resident of Aylsham, Norfolk, was arrested in October 2023 following the discovery of a vast collection of child sexual abuse material on his electronic devices. The investigation uncovered almost 50,000 indecent images and videos of children, categorised under the most serious levels, including category A material depicting penetrative sexual acts.

At Norwich Magistrates' Court, Cottam pleaded guilty to five offences: three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child, and one count of possessing extreme pornographic images involving a dog. The court heard that the offences were committed during a challenging period in Cottam's life marked by significant health issues, stress, and the loss of loved ones. His defence, represented by Annette Hall, emphasised his lack of prior convictions, full cooperation with authorities, and the potential for rehabilitation outside of prison.

Magistrates imposed an eight-month custodial sentence but suspended it for 24 months, citing the risk of losing his accommodation if imprisoned. The sentence included a requirement for 40 days of rehabilitation activity, incorporating an accredited programme aimed at addressing sex offender behaviour. Additionally, Cottam was made subject to a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his access to potential victims and monitor his activities.

In court, Cottam expressed profound remorse, stating, "I am totally ashamed of my actions" and affirming his desire not to reoffend. The case was reported by the Eastern Daily Press on 29 January, highlighting the severity of the offences despite the suspended sentence.
