Full Description

A man from Dereham has been imprisoned for 12 years following his conviction for multiple serious sexual offences committed against a woman in South Norfolk. Don Gallier, aged 32 and residing in Crane Close, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on 25 November 2016, after a six-day trial the previous month established his guilt on two counts of rape and one count of actual bodily harm (ABH).

The offences occurred over a period spanning from July 2011 to April 2015 in the South Norfolk area. The victim, who remains anonymous for legal reasons, reported the crimes to Norfolk Constabulary in April 2015, prompting a thorough investigation by the force's Rape Investigation Unit. The case highlights the challenges faced by victims in coming forward, yet underscores the police's commitment to pursuing justice in such matters.

Detective Constable Sally Barker from the Rape Investigation Unit commented on the case, stating: 'We should not underestimate the enormous amount of courage it took for the victim to speak to the police. This was an awful case which has had a considerable impact on the victim and her family. The bravery she has shown in coming forward must be commended.' She further noted that the sentencing should provide the victim with a sense of closure, allowing her to move forward positively.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Gallier was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register, a measure aimed at monitoring individuals convicted of sexual offences to protect the public. The investigation and trial were conducted by Norfolk Constabulary, demonstrating their dedication to handling rape allegations with full and thorough inquiries to ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
